Ceru is playing this instrument, which I initially chose because it reminds me of a hooting owl. In the years since, I've come to regret my decision because (with the exception of eli, who as a japanese flute player herself recognized the tsuchibue) everyone's natural first assumption is that he's eating an egg or a steamed bun in a very strange manner. orz

Eiri's character-based name doesn't translate, but if the characters were to be read individually, they would mean "hey" (roughly; it's just a sound you make before speech to indicate someone or to get his/her attention), "to know/to recognize", and "to hand over/to deliver" respectively. I guess I sort of tried to choose characters that were applicable to her as a character.
Ceru's character-based name translates to "color of", which is rather neat? Because Ceru is derived from cerulean, "the color of the sky". Of course, there's no etymological basis behind the coincidence here: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=cerulean — As you can see, the "ceru-" portion of cerulean was likely derived from the Latin referring to the heavens, seas, fields and leaves.
